Elon Musk

Elon Musk offered Donald Trump supporters what looked a lot like a Nazi salute yesterday during Donald Trump's inauguration speech.

Social media erupted with condemnation of what some called "Sieg Heil," while others applauded the gesture of the richest man in the world.

Musk turned and greeted supporters seated behind him at DC's Capitol One Arena for a second time almost immediately afterward.

"This is what victory feels like," Musk said.

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL), which campaigns against anti-Semitism, defines his salute as Nazi. As described by the ADL, in Germany between 1933 and 1945, the Nazi salute “was often accompanied by cheers or shouts of ‘Heil Hitler’ or ‘Sieg Heil.’”

Even Haaretz, an Israeli newspaper, described Musk's salute as a fascist salute most often associated with Nazi Germany.

Social media users expressed shock at Musk's gesture. Eric Feigl-Ding, a public health expert, wrote: "My God... Musk just did the Nazi salute live on TV."
