Since Donald Trump returned to the presidency of the United States in early 2025, the relationship between the US and Europe has entered a new phase of uncertainty. Trump has threatened several times to withdraw some of the US troops stationed in Europe, causing concern among European allies.

Initially, the Pentagon announced the cancellation of sending more than four thousand soldiers to Europe, but a few days later Trump changed his position and declared that he would deploy another five thousand soldiers to Poland.

This controversial move demonstrated not only Trump's unpredictable style but also the uncertainty over the future of the US military presence on the continent. However, many experts believe that the gradual reduction of the US presence in Europe began long before Trump.

The United States is increasingly focusing its attention on the Pacific region and its strategic rivalry with China. Europe is no longer the absolute priority of American foreign policy as it was during the Cold War.

American military bases in Europe were established after World War II.

Initially they served as occupying forces in defeated Axis countries, but later became part of the NATO architecture.

The Atlantic Alliance was founded in 1949 to guarantee the collective defense of its member countries against the Soviet Union. In the decades that followed, the US built large military bases, especially in Germany and Italy, where nuclear weapons were also deployed.

At the height of the Cold War, the number of American soldiers in Europe reached almost half a million. Today, there are about eighty thousand.

The main role of these bases is military deterrence. The American presence makes any attack on Europe automatically an attack on the United States.

This creates a very strong deterrent effect for any potential adversary, especially for Russia after its invasion of Ukraine. But the US doesn't just maintain the bases to defend Europe. They are also essential to American interests around the world.

These bases have supported operations in the Middle East, Afghanistan, Iraq, and Africa. Europe functions as a logistical and strategic hub for the U.S. military. Without them, many global military operations would be much more difficult or impossible.

In addition to the military aspect, there is also a political dimension. The American presence in Europe has given Washington great diplomatic influence over European countries. For decades, the relationship between the US and Europe was based on a kind of unwritten agreement: America guaranteed security, while Europe provided political and strategic loyalty.

Trump sees this report differently. He considers the American presence an economic burden and demands that Europeans pay more for their defense. In his vision, alliances are no longer based on long-term strategic partnership, but on immediate economic gain.

Meanwhile, Europeans themselves are divided over the presence of American bases. In Poland, most citizens support them, seeing them as protection against Russia. In other countries, such as Italy, the majority of the population is against them.

The main question today is whether Europe can defend itself without the U.S. Experts say a total American withdrawal is highly unlikely, but Europe still depends on the Americans for military technology, satellite intelligence and strategic defense.

For this reason, the European Union is increasingly investing in strengthening common defense.
