Gun attack near the White House, perpetrator executed by Secret Service agents

A young gunman died Saturday evening after a gunfight with Secret Service agents near the White House in Washington, US media reported.

According to authorities in the United States, the suspected perpetrator has been identified as Nasire Best, previously known to the Secret Service and with a history of mental health problems.

The incident occurred shortly before 6 p.m. local time, when the young man allegedly pulled a gun from his bag and opened fire near the security perimeter. Federal agents responded immediately, returning fire and seriously wounding the 21-year-old, who later died in hospital.

A bystander was also injured in the incident, although authorities have not yet released information on his condition. No Secret Service officers were injured in the collision.

Sources close to the investigation told CBS that Nasire Best had previously attempted to approach the White House. In July 2025, he was arrested by federal agents near the presidential residence and later sent to a psychiatric facility for treatment.

According to the same sources, the young man had been living in Washington for about a year and a half and used a revolver during the attack.
