France has banned Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir from entering its territory after the publication of footage of him mocking the arrested activists of the "Global Sumud" flotilla.
The decision was made public by French Foreign Minister Jean-Noul Barrot, who stated that Ben-Gvir's behavior was unacceptable and violated the human dignity of French and European citizens.
The incident occurred after Israeli naval forces stopped the flotilla in international waters near Cyprus and arrested about 430 participants. In videos posted on social media, the activists were seen kneeling, blindfolded and handcuffed, while Ben-Gvir taunted them. The footage sparked strong international reactions and outrage in several European countries.
France, Italy, the Netherlands, Canada and Spain summoned Israeli ambassadors to demand explanations and condemned the treatment of the activists. French authorities stated that they could not tolerate threats or violence against their citizens, especially from a high-ranking state official.
French Minister Barrot said Ben-Gvir's actions are part of a long series of statements and behaviors that incite hatred and violence against Palestinians. He also called on the European Union to take action and impose sanctions on the Israeli minister.
The scandal has further increased diplomatic tensions between Israel and several European countries, while human rights organizations are calling for an international investigation into the treatment of the flotilla activists.
