Moscow's Pearl Harbor/ For Putin "all options are on the table"
Ukrainian attack on Russian strategic bases

According to Russian doctrine, an attack on strategic bases is sufficient to authorize a nuclear retaliation.

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine has entered a dramatic new phase. A sudden and extremely powerful attack by Ukrainian military intelligence on Saturday, May 31, dealt a severe blow to Russia's nuclear capabilities, leaving Vladimir Putin facing a dangerous choice: respond with nuclear weapons or exercise restraint for the sake of international balance?

Ukraine strikes at the heart of Russia's nuclear arsenal

A wave of Ukrainian drones penetrated deep into Russian territory on the evening of May 31, damaging dozens of long-range strategic bombers – aircraft designed to carry nuclear missiles.

A nuclear submarine base was even attacked, and at least one of the submarines is suspected to have been damaged. These attacks have deeply shaken Russian security and the image of military power that the Kremlin has tried to maintain for decades.

Russian Bloggers: "This is our Pearl Harbor"

Roman Alekhine, one of the most followed military bloggers in Russia, declared that this attack "is our Pearl Harbor."

Images of the planes in flames spread on social media, severely damaging Putin's authority as an invincible leader.

Putin put under nuclear pressure

According to Russian military doctrine, attacks on strategic bases constitute justification for the use of nuclear weapons.

Popular pro-Kremlin channels, such as "Two Generals", with over 1.2 million followers on Telegram, are calling for immediate retaliation, including the possibility of using a tactical nuclear bomb in the Black Sea, with a possible target of Snake Island.

Suspicions of Western involvement

The Russian nationalist narrative does not acknowledge that Ukraine acted alone. It blames Great Britain, the Baltic states and, implicitly, NATO.

According to them, this is an attack orchestrated by the West, an act of aggression represented by the Euro-Atlantic alliance.

The US and the West unprepared for escalation

According to Western sources, Washington was not informed of this operation, although the attack had been prepared for 18 months.

From Ukraine's perspective, it was a pure attack on military targets, aimed at deterring attacks on Ukrainian cities and especially, after failed attempts at a long-term ceasefire.

Zelensky takes responsibility: War must return to Russia

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that he had personally supervised the operation and declared that "the war must return to where it began - on Russian territory."

Will Russia respond with nuclear weapons?

Russia is facing a difficult choice: a conventional response or nuclear escalation. The memory of 2022, when a nuclear threat was averted by the intervention of the US, Britain, France and Germany, is still fresh. But this time, the situation is more volatile.

Putin is aware that an attack on civilians could damage relations with Donald Trump and the US, which are vital to Russia's political future.

However, he cannot ignore the serious blow to his military prestige.
