Iran's warning to the world: Oil could reach $200 a barrel

Iran has warned that oil prices could reach $200 a barrel as its forces attacked merchant ships in the Persian Gulf amid escalating conflict with the US and Israel.

According to Reuters, Iranian forces fired on several merchant ships on Wednesday in the blockaded Gulf area, as Tehran warned of major consequences for global energy markets.

The spokesman for the Iranian military command, Ebrahim Zolfaqari, addressed the United States directly, warning of a drastic increase in oil prices.

"Prepare for oil to reach $200 per barrel, because its price depends on regional security, which you have destabilized," he declared.

The conflict has caused the biggest disruption to energy supplies since the oil crises of the 1970s, as maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz - through which about a fifth of the world's oil passes - has been blocked due to the escalating fighting.

Meanwhile, the International Energy Agency has proposed releasing 400 million barrels of oil from global strategic reserves to stabilize the market, the largest coordinated intervention measure in history.

However, experts warn that the amount that could be released to the market covers only a portion of the supply that normally passes through the Strait of Hormuz.

According to Iranian authorities, forces from Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps have fired on two ships in the Persian Gulf that allegedly disobeyed their orders. One of them, a Thai-flagged cargo ship, caught fire and the crew was forced to abandon ship, while three people are missing.

A Japanese-flagged container ship and another Marshall Islands-flagged ship were also reported to have been damaged by shells. With these incidents, the number of merchant ships hit since the start of the war has reached 14.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump stated in a telephone interview with American media that the military operation against Iran could end soon.

"There's practically nothing left to hit in Iran. Every time I want to end it, the war will end," he said.

However, on the ground, fighting continues. US and Israeli airstrikes have hit targets in several Iranian cities, while Iran has fired missiles at targets in the Middle East, including a US base in Iraq and targets in Israel.

According to data submitted by Iran to the United Nations, more than 1,300 Iranian civilians have been killed since the attacks began on February 28. On the other hand, Iranian attacks on Israel have caused at least 11 fatalities, while seven American soldiers have been killed and about 140 injured during the conflict.
