The war in Gaza, the bloodiest for Palestinian children

A Palestinian child is killed every 15 minutes by Israel's shelling of Gaza, according to a Palestinian NGO. According to Monday's report by Defense for Children International (DCI), more than 1,000 Palestinian children out of 2,808 total victims have been killed by Israeli airstrikes since the start of the war.

There has not been in the conflicting history between Israel and Hamas, a bloodier moment for the lives of children - the number of whom were killed in this year's fighting, has reached previously unheard of numbers.

According to the calculation made by Al Jazeera, the year 2023 has been the bloodiest for children, since over 1 thousand have been tragically killed by Israeli bombings and their number is increasing.

In the last two weeks alone, over 800 children have been killed by Israeli shells.

In the Palestinian community, one in two residents is under the age of 18. More than 30% of the Palestinians killed in recent days in the Gaza Strip are minors.

To find the second highest figure (half of today's), we have to go back in time to 2014, during a fierce war between Israel and Hamas again, where the number of children killed that year reached 532.

In the 2008-2009 war, meanwhile, 341 children were killed by Israeli bombing.

With lower figures, but still deeply sad, are the fights of 2012 and 2021, when respectively 35 children lost their lives from the bombings in 12' and 66 others in 21'.

In the last few hours in Gaza, photos have circulated on Palestinian social networks. Children write their first name, last name and national identity number on the palm of their hand. In case their family will have to identify them if they die too.

At the Shifa hospital in Gaza, every hour for ten days, staff have seen dozens of children rescued from the rubble. Their faces are covered in blood and dust. To urgently identify these newly transported victims, the city's busiest hospital now uses an acronym "WCNSF", "Wounded Child with No Surviving Family".

Beyond the bombing, children are the first victims of the total siege imposed on the Palestinian enclave by the Israeli Defense Minister since October 9.

Gaza today is almost exclusively deprived of drinking water, electricity and food. As a result, many residents use sewage from wells, increasing the risk of disease, UNICEF recently warned.

"Even when potable water is available, there is no fuel to transport it to stranded families," explains Khuloud Saba, a researcher specializing in social and health inequalities in the region. "If emergency aid does not reach the affected population quickly, the lack of water and/or contaminated water will endanger the lives of young people, especially those under five years of age, as their immune capacity is limited," he told the Lebanese. "L'Orient Le Jour". "Many babies would not survive the lack of milk and nutrients if the war continues."

It should also be noted that the population in Gaza is one of the youngest in the world, with half of the population under the age of 18.

So of the 2.3 million Palestinians in Gaza, about 1.15 million are children or teenagers.

And the war, precisely them, is affecting them more than all, with the present without a roof to protect, and the future without any concrete vision of calm, or hope for peace.

In some facilities, such as the Nasser hospital in Khan Younes, Gaza's second largest, children under the age of three mostly occupy the intensive care wards, filled with victims of Israeli bombing.
