Man killed by 4-meter shark in Western Australia

A 38-year-old man has been killed by a 4-meter shark in Western Australia.

This is the first fatal incident in Western Australia since March last year, when a surfer was attacked on a remote beach.

The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development in Perth told AFP it had received a report that the man had been bitten by a great white shark.

Authorities called on citizens to show "increased caution" in the area's waters.

Since records began in 1791, nearly 1,300 shark attacks have been reported in Australia, of which more than 260 have resulted in fatalities.

In January this year, four shark attacks were reported along the New South Wales coast within two days.

One of the victims was 12-year-old Nico Antic, who jumped off a cliff in Sydney Harbour and was attacked by a suspected bull shark.
