The Strait of Bab al-Mandab, the new front in the Red Sea? ((Iran finds allies

Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi movement, whose attacks in the Red Sea have wreaked havoc on international shipping and trade during the war in Gaza, is ready to strike the key waterway again in a show of solidarity with Tehran, a Houthi leader said. Such a move would deepen the global oil and economic crisis caused by the war in the Middle East.

If the Houthis open a new front in the conflict, a possible target would be the Bab al-Mandab Strait off the coast of Yemen, a strategically important shipping point that controls traffic to the Suez Canal, as Iran has effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran's Shiite allies in Lebanon and Iraq have already been drawn into the conflict sparked by US and Israeli attacks on Iran, but the Houthi rebels have not yet directly entered the war.

“We are fully prepared militarily with all options. As for the details of the moment of launch, that is up to the leadership. We are following developments and we will know when the time is right to act,” the Houthi leader said, requesting anonymity. “So far Iran is doing well and is defeating the enemy every day. If the opposite happens, then we can reconsider the situation.”

Some diplomats and analysts say the Houthis are waiting for the right moment to enter the conflict in coordination with Iran, to exert maximum pressure. The effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz to hydrocarbon exports from the Gulf Arab states and the shift towards dependence on the Red Sea could create this opportunity.

According to an Iranian military source, Iran could open a new front in the Bab al-Mandab if its territory or islands are attacked. The strait, also known as the “Gate of Tears,” is the southern outlet of the Red Sea and is located between Yemen and the African coasts of Djibouti and Eritrea. It is one of the world’s most important shipping routes for goods, especially for oil heading to the Mediterranean via the Suez Canal or the SUMED pipeline in Egypt, as well as for goods heading to Asia.

Bab al-Mandab is about 29 kilometers wide at its narrowest point, limiting traffic to two maritime corridors for entry and exit.

Following the October 7, 2023 attack on Israel by the Palestinian group Hamas and the Israeli military offensive in Gaza, the Houthis began attacking international ships in the Red Sea in support of the Palestinians. They stopped the attacks after a US-brokered ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in October 2025.

According to Amr Al-Bidh, part of Yemen's Southern Transitional Council, the Houthis may enter the conflict when they see that Iran needs their support the most.
