Secret F-35 cargo ends up in Hong Kong, US launches investigation

The United States House of Representatives Armed Services Committee has launched an investigation after a shipment of F-35 fighter jet components ended up in Hong Kong instead of arriving in the US.

According to Bloomberg, the parts were being shipped from Australia to the United States for repairs, but for reasons still unknown, the shipment changed route and ended up in Hong Kong.

The incident has caused concern in Congress because of the risk that classified military technology could be exposed and potentially analyzed through reverse engineering.

"The committee is aware of this problem and we have received several reports on this issue. The committee continues to review the incident and monitor it," said Armed Services Committee spokeswoman Heather Vaughn.

The F-35 program office at the Pentagon confirmed the incident but did not disclose which components were in the cargo.

"We are aware of the issue with the shipment of unusable F-35 components and are actively working with US authorities and industry partners to recover these parts, investigate the incident, and take measures to prevent similar cases in the future," the program said.

Even Lockheed Martin, which manages the program's supply chain and uses commercial carriers for deliveries, said it could not discuss the status of specific cargoes or transportation procedures for security reasons.

According to Politico, which first reported the incident on September 18, the cargo also included an F-35 cockpit component, manufactured using stealth technology, to which only the United States and its allies have access.
