New York Times: Ukraine rejects deal with US for 50% of rare earth minerals!

During a closed-door meeting, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky rejected the Trump administration's offer to hand over half of Ukraine's mineral resources to the United States in exchange for its support.

The New York Times cited five people familiar with the proposal or with direct knowledge of the talks as saying the unusual deal would have given the United States a 50 percent interest in all of Ukraine's mineral resources, including graphite, lithium and uranium, according to two European officials.

But it is unclear whether this was intended solely to compensate for previous American support for Kiev's efforts to resist Russian aggression, or whether it would come in exchange for future military and financial assistance.

On Sunday, US national security adviser Mike Waltz indicated that this was at least partly due to past support. “The American people deserve some kind of payback for the billions they have invested in this war,” he was quoted as saying. “I think it would be a smart move for Zelensky to enter into this agreement with the United States,” he added.

Vast reserves of rare earth minerals give Ukraine the potential to be a strategic supplier to the West. The Zavallivsky mine in central Ukraine has one of the largest deposits of graphene in Europe, a key material for electric vehicle batteries and nuclear reactors. It is one of the large reserves of rare earth minerals targeted by the United States as it tries to reduce its dependence on China for such materials.
