On the first day of the war against Iran, the US allegedly used a new ballistic missile, called the Precision Strike Missile (PrSM), for the first time in real conditions. This is what The New York Times writes, based on an analysis of videos, photos after the explosion and assessments by weapons experts.

The attack took place on February 28 in the southern Iranian city of Lamerd, where a sports hall and an elementary school near a Revolutionary Guard facility were hit. According to Iranian authorities, at least 21 people were killed in the attack, while dozens more were injured.

According to the American newspaper, the manner of the explosion in the air and the damage to buildings match the characteristics of the PrSM missile, which is designed to explode just above the target and scatter metal fragments over a wide area.

Photos from the scene show walls and surfaces riddled with metal fragments, while inside the school, broken windows, signs of fire and traces of blood are visible.

The New York Times also quotes a US official, who confirms on condition of anonymity that the weapon used was precisely the PrSM. Independent weapons experts also reach the same conclusion.

What makes the incident even more serious is the fact that the gym and school were considered civilian objects. According to Iran's representative to the UN, a girls' volleyball team was in the gym, while local reports say that children were among the victims.

US Central Command said it was aware of the reports and was verifying them, insisting that US forces do not strike civilians indiscriminately.

The PrSM missile is a new American short-range weapon, manufactured by Lockheed Martin, and its use in Lamerd may have been its first combat debut.
