Long before the United States and Israel launched attacks on Iran, the Islamic Republic had already prepared its strategic "weapon": keeping the world's most important oil transportation artery under pressure to balance the military superiority of its adversaries, three regional sources familiar with Iranian planning told Reuters.

For decades, Iran has warned that in the event of conflict it will restrict the passage of oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz - a strategic point where its rivals are most exposed, as any disruption there causes immediate shocks to global energy markets.

By targeting the main artery of oil exports from the Persian Gulf, Tehran has turned the region's greatest economic advantage into its strongest deterrent, the sources said.

About a fifth of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas usually passes through this vital strait, at the northern end of which Iran sits. According to United Nations data, traffic through the corridor has fallen by 97% since the start of the war against Iran on February 28.

Iran has used similar tactics in the past. During the so-called “Tanker War” in the Iran-Iraq conflict (1980-1988), attacks on ships turned the Persian Gulf into one of the most dangerous sea lanes in the world, forcing the US to escort tankers through the strait.

Today, however, Iran has far more powerful tools at its disposal, including vast arsenals of missiles and low-cost drones that can threaten shipping over a much wider area. This month’s attacks showed how quickly Tehran can disrupt traffic in the Strait of Hormuz without the need for massive naval mine deployments.

"If the global economy is taken hostage, Trump will step down"

“Iran is militarily inferior, there is no way it can win in a direct confrontation,” said Ali Vaez, director of the Iran program at the International Crisis Group. Anticipating further strikes from the US and Israel after the 12-day war last June, Tehran has been considering ways to expand the conflict “in time and space.”

"If Iran takes the global economy hostage, Trump will be the first to back down," he added.

Regional sources, who requested anonymity because they are not authorized to speak publicly, said the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has been preparing for years for a confrontation with Israel and Washington.

According to them, the plan was activated on February 28, after the assassination of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on the first day of the conflict.

Iran's immediate objective is survival, Vaez emphasizes. Beyond that, the broader goal is to force Washington to admit that pressure — through military force, economic sanctions, or diplomatic isolation — doesn't work.

Whether this “message” will actually be understood remains uncertain. However, by weaponizing the world’s most critical energy corridor and extending the conflict far beyond its borders, Iran is betting that it can outlast a much more powerful adversary. (Reuters_
