Italian airports are testing facial recognition technology, which means passengers won't have to show their passports before boarding a plane.

Called FaceBoarding, the system scans passengers' faces to allow them to pass through security checks and boarding gates instead of showing their passport, ID card or ticket.

In advance, passengers must register at special points in airports or through an application, after checking in for the flight.

The new system uses biometric recognition software created by French IT company Thales.

It shortens the time of waiting in the gate and boarding the plane.

"In addition to speeding up screening procedures, this increases effectiveness and guarantees the protection of privacy and passenger data," said a statement from SEA, the company that manages Milan's Linate and Malpensa airports.

FaceBoarding is currently available to all passengers over the age of 18 at two airports in Italy: Milan Linate and Catania. Very soon, this technology will also be extended to Malpensa airport.

Besides ITA Airways, Scandinavian Airlines is also registered in this system, where the service is available for all airlines.

In parallel, the old procedures are also in operation. Those who do not wish to use the system can access security and gates as usual using their ID and boarding pass.
