Mitsotakis calls for early elections: Dissolve Parliament
Kyriakos Mitsotakis

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis asked the President of the Republic at noon on Saturday for the early dissolution of the Parliament and the holding of parliamentary elections on May 21.

With the sealing of the relevant presidential decree on Monday, April 24, Greece officially enters the electoral campaign.

In this way, party staff and MP candidates are subject to election rules, with specific restrictions on television appearances, while the Minister of the Interior and the government representative are replaced.

The main characteristic of these elections is that for the first time they are held with a simple proportional system and as a result no party can win a majority in the parliament as it will have to concentrate over 46% of the votes.

So the day after the elections will be of particular interest, as within ten days the process of mandates for government that will be received by the first three parties will have to be completed, while the differences between them to create a coalition government are too great .

Therefore, it is not excluded that the party leaders will return the mandate to Mrs. Sakellaropoulou in a shorter time. However, the competent courts will have ratified the elected deputies and at the same time the new Parliament will be constituted as a body.

In this case, the President of the Republic must appoint one of the presidents of the country's three supreme courts as Prime Minister and swear in the interim government that will lead the country, in the second elections, with the extended proportional system.

After the swearing in, the new Assembly will convene in early June, for a parliamentary session, and then...it will be dissolved in early July for the second elections, most likely on July 2.

If even then a government with a parliamentary majority will not emerge, then the process of mandates is repeated. And if it is not possible to form a cooperation government, then the country will go to a third election, probably in early September.
