Republican Mike Johnson was re-elected as Speaker of the House of Representatives after securing sufficient votes.

He received the 218 votes he needed to retain the role.

Republicans control the House of Representatives with a narrow majority of 219–215.

The election of the speaker is one of the first acts of the new Congress, as without his election, Congress cannot perform any function.

Congress is expected to convene on January 6 to certify Donald Trump's presidential election victory.

With Mr. Trump's inauguration on January 20, Republicans will have control of all three branches of government in both houses of Congress and the White House.
