European leaders have issued a joint statement following Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin's meeting in Alaska, stressing that "the next step should be further talks, including with President Zelensky."
The leaders announce that they are "ready to work with President Trump and President Zelensky on a trilateral summit with European support."
"We are ready to keep up the pressure on Russia," the statement said, adding that "Ukraine can count on our unwavering solidarity as we work towards a peace that protects the vital security interests of Ukraine and Europe."
"What is decided on the territory of Ukraine will be in the hands of Ukraine. International borders should not be changed by force," the statement continued, adding that the leaders are "determined to do more to keep Ukraine strong in order to move towards an end to the war and a just and lasting peace."
The full statement of European leaders:
In the early hours of this morning, President Trump briefed us and President Zelensky following his meeting with the Russian President in Alaska on August 15, 2025.
The leaders welcomed President Trump's efforts to stop the killings in Ukraine, end Russia's aggressive war, and achieve a just and lasting peace.
As President Trump said, "there's no deal until there's a deal."
As envisioned by President Trump, the next step should be further talks that will also include President Zelensky, whom he will meet soon.
We are also ready to work with President Trump and President Zelensky on a trilateral summit with European support.
We are clear that Ukraine must have irrefutable security guarantees to effectively protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity. We welcome President Trump's statement that the United States is ready to provide security guarantees.
No restrictions should be placed on Ukraine's armed forces or its cooperation with third countries. Russia cannot veto Ukraine's path to the EU and NATO.
It will be up to Ukraine to make decisions on its territory. International borders should not be changed by force.
Our support for Ukraine will continue. We are determined to do more to keep Ukraine strong and to achieve an end to the fighting and a just and lasting peace.
As the killings in Ukraine continue, we stand ready to keep the pressure on Russia. We will continue to strengthen sanctions and other economic measures to put pressure on Russia's war economy until a just and lasting peace is achieved.
Ukraine can count on our unwavering solidarity as we work towards a peace that protects the vital security interests of Ukraine and Europe.
