During the summit in Alaska, US President Donald Trump personally delivered to Russian President Vladimir Putin a letter from his wife, Melania Trump, raising concern about the situation of children in Ukraine and Russia.
This episode was announced by White House officials to the Reuters news agency.
The First Lady, who was born in Slovenia, was not present on the Alaska trip, but according to officials, her letter mentioned the abductions and displacement of children during the war in Ukraine.
The government in Kiev estimates that at least 19,500 Ukrainian children have been deported and forcibly relocated to Russia or Russian-occupied territories since the start of the aggression in February 2022.
The issue of abducted children remains highly sensitive in Ukraine, where many believe that no peace agreement should be signed without including the return of all abducted children.
In 2023, the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin and his commissioner for children's rights, Maria Lvova-Belova, for the illegal deportation of children from Ukraine.
