US-Russia meeting produces no agreement, Trump: We made progress, but Ukraine

Immediately after the meeting and joint press conference with Vladimir Putin in Alaska, US President Donald Trump gave an interview to the American television network Fox News.

The White House chief of staff gave his long-awaited meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin a 10 and said there had been “very good progress” toward peace in Ukraine. However, Trump stressed that “there’s no deal until there’s a deal.”

"It was a very warm meeting. Putin is a strong man, very tough, but the meeting between two important countries was warm and constructive. It's a good thing when big countries understand each other. I think we're very close to an agreement. But, of course, Ukraine has to give its consent, too," Trump said during the interview.

Trump described the meeting as "extremely productive," but stressed that an end to the conflict has not yet been reached.

“There were many points where we agreed, most of them, I would say. We also had some big issues where we haven’t reached an agreement yet, but we have made progress. There is no agreement until there is an agreement,” he told the media.
Russian President Vladimir Putin shared a similar sentiment, calling the summit a “constructive atmosphere with mutual respect.”

The next steps toward peace in Ukraine will include talks between Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other NATO leaders. Trump said he would advise Zelenskyy to “make a deal.”

"Ukraine is facing a huge war machine. I think we are close to a deal, but I don't want to say for sure. Usually, when I am close, I say 50-50, because a lot of things can happen. But I believe that President Putin wants to resolve this issue, a war that should never have happened. Today I was presented with a book with thousands of names of prisoners who could be released," Trump added.

The US president also revealed that he is willing to participate in a peace meeting with Putin and Zelenskyy.

"Now everything depends on President Zelenskyy and of course European countries should also be more involved. But if they want, I will be at that meeting. They are planning a meeting between Zelenskyy, Putin and apparently me. I did not ask for it myself, but I want to make sure that this happens. And I think we have a good chance."

At a press conference, Putin confirmed Trump's statements that such a war would not have broken out if he were President of America. Meanwhile, Trump blamed the Biden administration for "gross incompetence."
