Those who refuse are fined 2,000 euros, the population census in Kosovo starts

In Kosovo, the population census process has begun, which is expected to last about six weeks and will provide a comprehensive overview of people's living and social conditions.

The law stipulates that in case of refusal to participate in the registration, the penalty is 30 to 2,000 euros per person. Residents will be registered, but also immigrants living abroad. There are a total of seven questionnaires to fill out, including the one about the damage from the war in 1998-1999.

About 3,500 registrars and 891 supervisors, as well as the staff of the Kosovo Statistics Agency, will be engaged in the Population Census. This time, there are seven questionnaires to be completed. In this registration, the questionnaire for war damages and the one for the registration of compatriots have been added.

The Statistics Agency justifies the collection of these data with the importance of making better policies for the country, planning the budget and investments, improving living conditions in the country and foreign investments.

According to the law, every resident of the Republic of Kosovo is obliged, during the Census, to provide the registration officer with all the correct data in the Population Census questionnaires. The preliminary results of the census are expected to be published within three months.

There are a total of 42 questions in the individual questionnaire. The declaration of religious belief is also included in this form. Below the question it is clarified that according to the Constitution of Kosovo, the registered person can choose not to declare it. The same clarification is found under the question about ethnicity.

The following questions are about citizenship, residence, education and employment. At the end of the form, there are also questions about travel and the type of transport that citizens use for travel, where 14 options are given.

The last census of the population in Kosovo was done in 2011, according to which the total number of inhabitants was 1 million 739 thousand 825. In this census, the inhabitants of the municipalities with a Serbian majority in the north of Kosovo - Leposavic, Zubin were not included Potok, Zveçan and North Mitrovica - as at that time they had rejected the process.
