The war in Ukraine created "blood ties" between North Korea and Russia, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said in a New Year's message to Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday.

Kim said 2025 was a "truly important year" in the alliance between Pyongyang and Moscow, which was forged by "blood ties" in the same trenches, referring to the deployment of thousands of North Korean soldiers in the Russian Kursk region in August, the North Korean state news agency (KCNA) reported.

During a reception on December 13 for the Army Engineering Regiment, Kim said that nine North Korean soldiers had been killed during their 120-day deployment to Russia.

The two countries have significantly strengthened their military cooperation since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

In addition to sending troops to Russia's Kursk region to counter a surprise Ukrainian invasion, North Korea has supplied Russia with artillery shells and missiles, Reuters reported. In return, Moscow has sent Pyongyang military technology as well as economic, food and energy aid, analysts said.
