Moscow is likely to have stationed nuclear-capable hypersonic ballistic missiles at a former air base in eastern Belarus, a development that could significantly strengthen Russia's ability to strike targets across Europe, Reuters reports.

This assessment was made by two American researchers after analyzing satellite images.

According to a source familiar with the matter, who spoke on condition of anonymity, the researchers' conclusions broadly align with US intelligence assessments, although the information has not been authorized for official publication.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has made clear his intention to deploy medium-range Oreshnik missiles, estimated to have a range of up to 5,500 kilometers, in Belarus. However, the specific location of these missiles had not previously been reported.

Security experts estimate that the deployment of the Oreshnik missiles would highlight the Kremlin's increasing reliance on the nuclear threat as a means of discouraging NATO countries from supplying Ukraine with weapons that could strike deep inside Russian territory.

The development is expected to heighten security concerns in Europe and further strain relations between Russia and its Western allies.
