Israel launches "operation" in Gaza, Netanyahu: We are ready for peace

Israel said it had launched "extensive ground operations" in Gaza as part of an expanded campaign to control large parts of the Belt.

The announcement on Sunday came hours after Benjamin Netanyahu signaled that Israel was open to an agreement with Hamas that included an "end to fighting" in residential Palestinian territory.

The military said that over the past day, troops had "launched extensive ground operations throughout the northern and southern Gaza Strip," adding that they had "eliminated dozens of terrorists, dismantled terrorist infrastructure... and are currently being placed in key positions."

Tanks and armored vehicles moved into key cities in Gaza on Friday as Israel stepped up its campaign to release hostages and defeat Hamas.

But while Netanyu, Israel's prime minister, confirmed that ground forces were advancing on Sunday, his negotiators were also entering indirect talks with Hamas in Qatar.

In a statement on Sunday, Netanyahu's office said that "the negotiating team in Doha is working to seize every opportunity for an agreement - either under the Witkoff framework or as part of ending the fighting," referring to Steve Witkoff, the US envoy to the Middle East who has been involved in previous discussions.

Such an agreement, according to Netanyahu's statement, "would include the release of all hostages, the expulsion of Hamas terrorists and the disarmament of the Gaza Strip."

Netanyahu's comments on Sunday represent a 180-degree turn after he promised last week: "There will be no way for us to stop the war."

Israel has come under pressure from the US, with Donald Trump, the US president, and Marco Rubio, the Secretary of State, both raising concerns that Gazans are facing hunger under repeated relentless bombing.
