A high-level meeting took place today at the Italian government headquarters, where Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni hosted US Vice President JD Vance and European Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen, in an effort to launch a new dialogue between the European Union and the United States.
The meeting was held in an official atmosphere, against the backdrop of the Italian flag between the American and European ones, and was greeted with the ceremonial red carpet. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio was also in the lineup, while media reports that Volodymyr Zelensky may also be invited to Palazzo Chigi.
Meloni described this as a first step for a new chapter in EU-US relations.
"There are problems to overcome, but our relationship is fundamental. I hope that today is a new beginning," she declared during the press conference.
She added that Italy's role is to help build bridges of communication, especially at a time when the West must maintain its unity and strength in the face of global challenges.
US Vice President J.D. Vance, on behalf of Donald Trump's administration, thanked Meloni for the hospitality and described him as "a good friend".
"Europe is an important ally for us. Yes, we have some disagreements – in trade, for example – but we also have a lot of common points. This meeting, we hope, is the beginning of a long negotiation with mutual benefits."
The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, stressed the need to increase European investments in defence, stressing that the EU will mobilise up to 800 billion euros over the next four years in this regard.
"A strong Europe also means a strong NATO," said Von der Leyen, adding that the goal is a fair and stable agreement for Ukraine.
The meeting marks a serious effort to strengthen transatlantic ties at a crucial moment for global politics, with expectations that next week will be crucial for further developments in the international arena.
