Russian President Vladimir Putin sent a clear message to US President Donald Trump today regarding the war in Ukraine and the peace talks, a day before the phone call that the two leaders are expected to hold tomorrow, May 19.
The Russian president, in statements to VGTRK journalist Pavel Zarubin, emphasized that his country expects reciprocity from the United States in terms of respecting each other's national interests.
"The Americans, the American people and the American leadership, including the president, have their own national interests, and we respect them. We assume that they will treat us in the same way," Putin said.
At the same time, Putin spoke about the results that Russia is achieving in the war in Ukraine.
"Russia has enough strength and resources to bring what started in 2022 to a logical conclusion with the result the Russian Federation needs."
He also referred to the outcome he expects, saying that this is the elimination of the causes that caused the crisis in the first place:
"What Russia expects as a result is the elimination of the causes that provoked this crisis, the creation of conditions for long-term lasting peace and ensuring the security of the Russian state, the protection of the interests of our people in those territories that we always talk about. Where live people who consider Russian their mother tongue and consider Russia their homeland," Putin said.
Previously, the Russian side has repeatedly stated that the outcome of resolving the Ukrainian conflict must be long-term peace.
Moscow's position is that a ceasefire in Ukraine is dangerous without addressing the causes of the crisis.
Trump's announcement came after high-level peace talks between Russia and Ukraine in Istanbul, brokered by Turkey, where both sides agreed to exchange 1,000 prisoners of war each and continue negotiations for a ceasefire.
