Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy will be released from prison after a Paris court ruled on Monday that he can remain free pending the appeal of his conviction in September for "criminal conspiracy". 

Sarkozy was convicted of his involvement in a scheme to finance the 2007 campaign with suspected money from Libya in exchange for diplomatic favors.

During a video appearance before the court, he stated that the 20 days spent in prison have been "very difficult."

Prosecutors requested that Sarkozy be released under judicial control, with restrictions on the people with whom he can have contact.

The court also clarified that the former president is prohibited from any communication with the people involved in the case, as well as with France's current Justice Minister, Gerald Darmanin, who attracted public attention after visiting Sarkozy in prison in October.
