Paris prosecutors seek conditional release for Nicolas Sarkozy

Prison is not for all men. The Paris prosecutor's office has requested that Nicolas Sarkozy, the former French president, be released on bail, with a ban on contact with other defendants and witnesses in the investigation into alleged Libyan funds that financed his 2007 election campaign.

The prosecutor's office has clarified that "the extreme importance of the facts and the severity of the sentence" should not influence the decision, which should be guided "only by the criteria of Article 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure."

The article lists the conditions justifying the detention: the risk of evidence tampering and contact with other defendants. Sarkozy has been held in Paris' La Santé prison for several weeks, following the judges' decision.

The French justice system will decide on the request for bail in the coming hours.
