Iran categorically denies being behind the attack on Salman Rushdie, blaming the writer and his supporters for what happened. The 75-year-old was stabbed on stage while participating in an event in New York state.

For years he had faced death threats because of the book published in 1988, "The Satanic Verses", which turned him into a sworn enemy of Islamic fundamentalists. Iranian media have widely commented on the attack on the Rushdies, calling it a divine punishment.

State television JaameJam highlighted the news that the writer could lose an eye, saying "one eye of the devil was blinded". But the spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Tehran, Nasser Kanaani categorically denied any connection with the aggressor and said that no one has the right to accuse the Islamic Republic of Iran.

However, he added that freedom of expression does not justify insulting the religion of others. "In this attack, we consider that no one else, except Salman Rushdie and his supporters, is guilty or deserves to be punished...Iran has no information about Rushdie's aggressor except what has been published in the media", were his words.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken early denounced what he called the disgusting reaction of Iran's state media, and denounced the institutions of this country for inciting violence against the author. He said in a statement that Rushdie had consistently fought for the universal rights of freedom of expression, belief and the press.

The writer is hospitalized in a New York hospital where he is being treated for multiple stab wounds. The 75-year-old's son said Sunday that his dad was still in critical condition, but his sense of humor was still intact.
