Graffiti on the wall

The portraits of political figures seen in the photo above are some of the hundreds of outdoor images painted on the walls and houses of the village of Staro Zhelezare, near Bulgaria's central city of Plovdiv.

Graffiti art in the streets of Staro Zhelezara has been presented since 2015.

Every summer, a Polish/Bulgarian couple - Katarzyna and Ventzislav Piriankov - leave Poznan, Poland, where they teach art, and travel to Ventzislav's grandparents' estate in Staro Zhelezare with several students.

Students paint new works every day from morning to night for several weeks during July and August.

Katarzyna says the art project on the outer walls of the residential buildings is "an attempt to revive the village".

After the fall of communism in Bulgaria, most of the inhabitants left the village of Staro Zhelezare for Bulgarian cities or to live abroad.

Ventzislav says that the concepts for the art to be painted on the walls of the village come "with a kind of brainstorming, especially in the evenings when we drink a little."

Villagers were initially skeptical about the project of painting the exterior walls. "It's interesting," says Katarzyna. "In the beginning, the Roma society here was more open to her."

After they made some noise, the unusual decorations started and tourists started visiting the village, the local Bulgarians also accepted the idea.

"Now locals even wait in line to make art on their walls," says Katarzyna.

Many of the paintings include local characters. The cow shown next to former US President Donald Trump belongs to the owner of the house where the artwork was created.

Anna Kossyk was one of the art students who made the mural above, about the current war in Ukraine. She says she "fell in love with Bulgaria" because of the friendliness of the villagers and will return to Staro Zhelezare next summer to continue the art project on the exterior walls.

"We don't see the end of the story. It's only about the process, about new ideas," she says./REL
