Serious incident in Munich, Israeli consulate attacked with weapons

German police opened fire on a suspected armed man near the Israeli consulate in the southern city of Munich.

The suspect was shot dead by the officers, who then surrounded the area.

According to the authorities, there is no information about other suspects, while they called on people to avoid the Karolinenplatz area, where the incident took place, but also Briennerstrasse, which is located near Karolinenplatz. Officials also called on the public not to post images of the incident on social networks.

Munich's documentation center for the history of National Socialism was opened nine years ago on the site of the former headquarters of the Nazi party, or "Brown House".

After the shooting, the police decided to increase security at Munich's main synagogue, the BBC reports.

The incident occurred 52 years after the 1972 attack on Israeli athletes by gunmen from the Palestinian militant group Black September, in which eleven athletes and a police officer were killed.
