Armed attack inside the school in Atlanta, 4 people are killed, 9 others are

Four people were killed and at least nine were injured in a shooting at a high school outside Atlanta.

Shots were fired Wednesday morning and officers converged on the campus of Apalachee High School as parents tried to find out if their children were safe at the school in Winder, Georgia.

One suspect has been detained, authorities said. It is not known if the killer was a student at the school.

"What you see behind us is a bad thing," Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith said at a brief news conference outside the school. He declined to provide details about the victims or the suspect.

The episode is just the latest among dozens of school shootings across the US in recent years, including notably deadly ones in Newtown, Connecticut, Parkland, Florida and Uvalde, Texas. School shootings have sparked heated debates about gun control.
