Police in Spain have arrested a man who was on the Federal Bureau of Investigation's (FBI's) 10 most wanted list for a series of human trafficking and pornography charges.

The detainee, a 40-year-old man from New Zealand, was arrested after he was found at a hotel in central Madrid, where he was staying under a false name to evade authorities, police said.

Although the detainee has only been identified by the initials MJP, sources have confirmed that he is Michael James Fratt, who is on the FBI's most wanted list.

Information about him and his photo can be found on the FBI's website - which has now been updated with the information that he has been caught - and according to US authorities, his pornographic websites had generated more than $17 million in revenue. The FBI had offered a $100,000 reward for information leading to his arrest.

He was arrested in the US and sentenced to life imprisonment for child pornography, sexual exploitation, sexual assault and illegal income. But he managed to escape and in November 2019, the authorities issued an arrest warrant for him.

Spanish police said US investigators had long suspected he was in Spain, but Spanish authorities had initially focused their search for the suspect in Barcelona.
