The Foreign Ministry of Germany has requested that the barricades in the north of Kosovo be removed as soon as possible and that the Serbs of Kosovo return to their institutions. After weeks of escalation, the German Foreign Ministry, in a statement to the "Der Standard" newspaper, demands that "the illegal barricades erected by the Kosovo Serbs, which also pose a security risk, should be removed as soon as possible ".
A spokesman for the Federal Foreign Ministry also said: "We are very concerned about the tensions in the north of Kosovo."
In recent weeks, militant nationalist Serbs have erected roadblocks in northern Kosovo. Among other things, they are protesting against the arrest of a police officer who allegedly attacked a polling station. On Thursday, there was also a demonstration in the north of Kosovo, during which a large Serbian flag was displayed, continues the report of the Austrian newspaper.
"Those Serbian nationalist militants who erected the barricades and organized the demonstration belong to the supporters of the Lista Srpska party, which is under the direct control of the government in Serbia. It calls into question the citizenship of Kosovo and the monopoly of the state of Kosovo for the use of force in the north of the country".
The newspaper also highlights the attacks that the German ambassador in Kosovo received for his statements demanding the removal of the barricades.
In recent weeks, there has been repeated violence against representatives of Kosovar institutions and journalists in the north of Kosovo, where the majority are Serbs. The rhetoric from Belgrade has also intensified. "President Aleksandar Vucic even thought of sending military personnel to Kosovo" writes Der Standard, referring to the Serbian request he made to KFOR. The newspaper also mentions Serbian Prime Minister Ana Bërnabiq's attack on Twitter against the German ambassador in Kosovo, Jörn Rohde. He had previously called for the dismantling of the barricades, which have also been blocking road traffic for weeks.
A spokesman for the German foreign office told Der Standard that Rohde had made clear statements and "again called on Serbia and Kosovo to engage constructively in the EU-led dialogue". These issues were discussed in the meetings between representatives of the Federal Foreign Ministry for the Western Balkans and the Serbian ambassador on December 21 in Berlin and between the German ambassador to Serbia and Serbian President Vučić on December 22 in Belgrade.
Association of Serbian Municipalities
The spokesperson of the Foreign Ministry also said: "We expect a constructive approach from Serbia. We have made it clear in these talks. It is important that the Kosovo Serbs return to the institutions of Kosovo as soon as possible. This is in the interest of the people living in the north. At the same time, Kosovo should agree to put on the agenda the implementation of the Association of Serbian Municipalities agreed in 2013 and 2015. We support the EU special envoy Miroslav Lajcak in his efforts to finally normalize relations between the two countries as part of the dialogue to move forward"./Express
