The Israel-Hamas war is spreading in Syria, fueled by growing instability, violence and a lack of progress towards a political solution to the 12-year-old conflict, the United Nations' special envoy for Syria said.
Geir Pedersen told the Security Council that in addition to the violence of the conflict in Syria, Syrians now face "the dire possibility of a possible wider escalation" following the October 7 Hamas attack on Syria and ongoing Israeli retaliatory actions.
"Spreading [the war] in Syria is not only a danger, it has already begun," said the UN envoy for Syria.
Pedersen cited airstrikes attributed to Israel that have hit airports in Aleppo and Damascus several times, and retaliatory strikes by the United States after Washington said its troops were sometimes attacked "by groups it claimed are backed by Iran, included in the Syrian territory".
With the region "that is tense and dangerous" he said that "more gasoline is being thrown into the fire that has already started to burn" in Syria, a country that has experienced an increase in violence even before October 7.
He said that the number of Syrians killed, injured and displaced is higher since 2020, stressing that attacks in areas controlled by the Government have increased.
The US ambassador to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, accused "terrorist groups", some of which are supported by Syria and Iran, of threatening to escalate the conflict in Gaza by "using Syrian territory to plan and carry out attacks against Israel". . It also accused Syria of allowing Iran and terrorist groups to use Syrian international airports for military purposes.
