United States President Joe Biden had a phone conversation Sunday with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, where he stressed the need for Israel to protect its citizens from terrorism in a way that protects civilians, the White House said.

The conversation between them took place while criticism of the death of Palestinian civilians has increased.

Biden also stressed the need to immediately increase the flow of humanitarian aid "to meet the needs of civilians in Gaza."

US President Biden's administration has come under increasing pressure to make clear that unwavering support for Israel does not mean approval of all actions by the US ally in the impoverished coastal enclave.

Earlier in several interviews for American television, White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said that Israel has a responsibility to protect the lives of innocent people in Gaza.

Sullivan said Washington was asking Israel tough questions, including on issues related to humanitarian aid, the distinction between terrorists and innocent civilians and Israel's plans for military operation.

"We believe that at every hour, every day of this military operation, the IDF (Israel Defense Forces), the Israeli government must make every possible effort to distinguish between Hamas terrorists who are legitimate military targets and civilians who are they are not," Sullivan said on CNN.

The National Security Adviser also said that Prime Minister Netanyahu has a responsibility to "restrain" extremist members of Jewish settlements in the Israeli-controlled West Bank.

"It is completely unacceptable that there is violence by extremist elements against innocent people in the West Bank," he said.

The brutal surprise attack by the Palestinian militant group Hamas inside Israel on October 7, which killed 1,400 people, prompted a wave of Israeli aerial bombardments and, more recently, a ground operation.

The militants have taken over 220 hostages from Israel, who are believed to be in Gaza.

Medical authorities in the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip say 8,005 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli strikes in the enclave of 2.3 million people.

The United States considers Hamas a terrorist organization.

Hamas militants who control Gaza have infiltrated the Palestinian population and civilian infrastructure, making operations against them extremely difficult, Sullivan noted.

"This adds to the difficulties for Israel but does not diminish its responsibility under international humanitarian law to distinguish between terrorists and civilians and to protect the lives of innocent people, and that is the vast majority of people in Gaza," Sullivan said. .
