On May 21, Greek citizens will vote in the general parliamentary elections. Prime Minister Mitsotakis seeks another term at the head of the government.

On May 21, general parliamentary elections will be held in Greece.

It was Greek Prime Minister Mitsotakis who announced the date, saying he wanted a clean slate to push further reforms after four years at the helm.

"The country and the citizens need clear horizons... the national elections will be held at the end of the four-year mandate as planned," said Mitsotakis.

According to polls, since coming to power in 2019, Mitsotakis' New Democracy Party has held a slight lead over the left-wing opposition SYRIZA.

But the tragic rail accident that killed 57 people has fueled public outrage and narrowed the gap.

The Prime Minister added that the "painful and traumatic" experience of the railway disaster highlighted the shortcomings that the state still has.

While admitting that "mistakes were made", Mitsotakis said his party's slogan will be "we will continue to change Greece in a more unconventional and bold way".

The May 21 elections will take place under a new system of proportional representation. This system makes it difficult for a party to win a clear majority, allowing for a second round of runoffs. This runoff vote is then expected to take place in July.
