Masons of the Athanor lodge, known for their dubious dealings, are facing justice for assaults, attempted murders and assassinations.

One of the most shocking trials in modern French history has begun in Paris. It's a scandal that seems to blur the lines between service to the state and organized crime.

Twenty-two defendants, an unusual mix of elite intelligence, law enforcement, and prominent Freemason figures, are facing charges typically heard in drug cartel trials.

But this time the protagonists are people who were supposed to be the guardians of law and order. It all began in an almost surreal way in July 2020, when police arrested two soldiers from the prestigious French paratrooper regiment, who were found armed near the apartment of Marie-Hélène Dini, a successful businesswoman.

During interrogation, they gave testimony that left investigators speechless. The agents were fully convinced that they were carrying out a government-sanctioned covert operation to eliminate a dangerous Mossad agent.

But the truth was much more banal and cruel. They had become part of a personal intrigue orchestrated by Jean-Luc Bagur, a professional rival of Dini and at the same time “honored master” of the Athanor Masonic lodge in Puteaux.

Bagur, a 69-year-old man with no criminal record, had decided to use his occult connections to "wipe off the map" the competition, offering a bounty of 70,000 euros for her head.

To accomplish this, he contacted Frédéric Vaglio, an entrepreneur and senior member of the lodge, who served as a liaison with a team of assassins led by Daniel Beaulieu, a retired officer of French intelligence, the DGSI.

This network, which initially seemed like an isolated case, was revealed to be a genuine criminal structure that had been operating for years under the cover of Masonic ceremonies and state secrets.

Sébastien Leroy, who served as Beaulieu's right-hand man and the leader of the attack squad, admitted during his detention that the group had committed a number of other serious crimes, including the murder of racing driver Laurent Pasquali in 2018.

The pilot's body was found in a forest, and investigations suggest that he was eliminated due to an unpaid debt to Vaglio's associates. In addition to murders, the "Masonic mafia" is suspected of committing robberies, industrial espionage and arson against rival businesses, often using psychological manipulation on the group's younger members, who were told they were serving France's higher interests.

Ms. Dini's lawyer, Jean-William Vézinet, has described this situation as a real nightmare, emphasizing that it is terrible to think that police officers and intelligence agents, people who are paid for the security of society, were transformed into hired killers on behalf of a private lodge.

While the trial is expected to last at least 3 months, attention has focused on Daniel Beaulieu, the alleged architect of the group of murderers, who after a suicide attempt in his cell, is exhibiting severe memory and concentration problems, making it difficult to fully unravel the evidence.

This process is not simply a trial against individuals, but a strong blow to the myths of the invincibility of security structures in France and a frightening window into the dark world where power, Masonic brotherhood and cold-blooded crime come together at a single point.
