Once a close ally, today his opponent: Who is Viktor Orban's rival?

From a close ally of the government to a frontal opponent of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, Péter Magyar has transformed into the most dangerous political figure for the long-standing Fidesz regime, with polls showing him close to victory in the April 12 elections.

At 45 years old, Magyar represents a story that for many voters seems like a classic political narrative: from “inside the system” to its strongest challenger.

Once part of Fidesz structures, he today accuses the government of corruption, clientelism, and moral degradation.

From within the system to the opposition

Magyar joined Fidesz in 2003 and was part of the conservative political elite for years. He married Judit Varga, a key figure in Orbán's government who later became justice minister.

Her career ended abruptly after a major scandal involving the coverage of a child sexual abuse case, an issue that shook Hungarian public opinion. In this climate, Magyar broke away from Fidesz, accusing the party of using women as a “political shield” and of covering up crises through manipulation.

In a 2024 statement, he wrote that he had long believed in the ideal of a sovereign and patriotic Hungary, but that this vision had become a “political product” that masks the preservation of power and the enrichment of the elite.

Rapid growth and popular support

His party, Tisza, has been gaining ground rapidly, leading in some polls by significant margins over Fidesz. Analysts see this growth as a result of a combination of public discontent and his profile as an “insider.”

Magyar has managed to communicate directly with the public, especially through social media, where he often uses humor and irony to respond to attacks from pro-government media. This strategy has helped him turn the attacks into political advantage.

An alternative, but not a complete break

Magyar's program focuses mainly on domestic issues: improving public services, reviving the economy and fighting corruption. He promises to restore democratic balances and prosecute the elite who, he says, have enriched themselves illegally.

However, unlike the traditional liberal opposition, he remains a nationalist and pragmatic figure.

He is not fully aligned with the European Union and supports the continuation of Russian energy imports, considering them necessary for the European economy.

Scandals and personal clashes

His rise to prominence has not come without controversy. His strained relationship with his ex-wife and the publication of private conversations have sparked intense public debate.

He has also faced various accusations and scandals, which he has described as discrediting campaigns organized by Fidesz.

Magyar has even accused people close to him of political espionage, publishing documents that, he says, show organized efforts to compromise him.

A real challenge for Orbán

Unlike previous opposition efforts, which failed to seriously threaten Orbán's rule, Magyar is seen as a real challenge. He has taken advantage of the political momentum, especially after the scandals that have hit the government, and has managed to mobilize disillusioned voters.

For many supporters, he is not necessarily an ideal figure, but a tool to change the status quo.

"I don't want to marry Magyar. I just want him to remove Orbán," said a 63-year-old teacher during one of his rally.

In this context, the April 12 elections are expected to be a defining moment for Hungary: a showdown between a leader who has dominated politics for more than a decade and a challenger coming from within the system he seeks to overthrow.
