France has decided to deploy about a dozen naval ships, including its aircraft carrier strike group, to the Mediterranean, the Red Sea and potentially the Strait of Hormuz as part of defensive support for allies threatened by conflict in the Middle East, French President Emmanuel Macron said on Tuesday.

Speaking in Cyprus before visiting the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle, which arrived this weekend in the eastern Mediterranean, Macron sought to reassure his Cypriot counterpart after Iranian drones were caught heading towards the island last week.

"We are bound together by strategic partnerships and the troop deployments that have taken place in recent days; our presence side by side today speaks to the strength and durability of these partnerships and that your fellow citizens can truly rely on this and know that behind these signed agreements there is solidarity between nations and their military commitment.

Finally, what we want to do is ensure freedom of navigation and maritime security in the eastern Mediterranean where we are now, in the Red Sea, from the Suez Canal to the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, specifically within the framework of Aspides, a coalition that already exists, headquartered in Greece and currently coordinated by Greece. France will contribute in the long term with two frigates dedicated to this effort.

"We are in the process of creating a purely defensive, purely escort mission, which must be prepared together with European and non-European states, and whose aim is to enable, as soon as possible after the most intense phase of the conflict is over, the escort of container ships and tankers to gradually reopen the Strait of Hormuz, which is essential for international trade, but also for the circulation of gas and oil, which must be able to be transported again from this region," Macron said.

Macron, during the trilateral meeting with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides, stated that France will continue to be present as a defensive force in the Mediterranean, the Red Sea and the Strait of Hormuz.

From the "Andreas Papandreou" military base, Macron emphasized:

“When someone attacks Cyprus, they attack all of Europe.” He added that French solidarity with Cyprus is immediate and strong, especially after the drone and missile attacks, which forced the deployment of the Mistral air defense system and the Languedoc frigate to the area.

He added that France is closely following the situation in Lebanon and Israel's response to Hezbollah, stressing that the goal is to prevent further attacks and maintain regional stability.

"The security of all Europeans is our common interest," Macron concluded, reiterating France's commitment to a continued presence in the region.
