Finland will try a permanent solution by burying nuclear waste in a remote point underground, a deposit where it can be safe for the next 100,000 years.

The repository is based on the "KBS-3" disposal concept developed by the Swedish Association for Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management (SKB), in close cooperation with Posiva.

The method envisages three protective barriers around the nuclear waste, the outermost part of which is represented by the bedrock of the area, which, in the case of Onkalo, consists mainly of solid rock formed at high temperatures and pressures.

The other two protective barriers are the copper and cast iron drums, inside which the spent fuel will be enclosed, and the betonite, a very ancient clay with absorbent properties, which will serve to fill the cavities inside which they will be placed.

An alternative to temporary surface disposal is the deep storage of nuclear waste in geologically stable areas.

After decades of research, in 2000 Finland identified the rocky substrate of the island of Olkiluoto as the most suitable place for the construction of this type of plant, the construction of which began in 2004 under the management of Posiva, a company owned by the Finnish power producer , Fortum and TVO.

Once completed, Onkalo will consist of 50 kilometers of underground tunnels over an area of approximately 2 km2, where depleted uranium is expected to begin burying from 2025.
