Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has reacted for the first time after the arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu.
According to Erdogan, the opposition's attempts to portray its internal conflicts, or its problems with the law, as the country's most important issue are "the height of hypocrisy."
He made the comments after Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, a prominent opposition figure and his main rival, was arrested on Wednesday on charges including corruption and aiding terrorism.
This arrest, which also caused numerous protests throughout Turkey, seems, however, that Erdogan is not worried by them.
"We have no time for opposition performances, neither on a personal level, nor on a party or alliance level," he added.
"The media and the opposition party are unable to respond to the accusations made by the judiciary, both on the diploma issue and on the corruption issue," Erdogan continued, referring to the accusations against Imamoglu and the fact that a day before his arrest, Istanbul University had canceled the Istanbul mayor's diploma certificate, considering it fake.
