Despite the bans and police brutality in central Istanbul, thousands of citizens took to the streets this Wednesday evening to protest in favor of Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu.

He was arrested this morning along with over 100 people.

Thousands of people have gathered outside the city hall waiting to hear the speech of CHP leader Ozgur Ozel.

Many see the arrest as part of a broader campaign to eliminate a key challenger to Erdogan ahead of the upcoming presidential election.

The move has raised concerns about the freedom of future elections under Erdogan, who has become increasingly authoritarian during his more than two-decade rule as prime minister and president.
