Iran seeks to minimize damage from US attack on Fordow nuclear base

Senior Iranian officials have stated that most of the highly enriched uranium was removed from the Fordow nuclear facility before the US airstrikes took place.

According to sources who spoke to Reuters, the personnel at this underground facility had been reduced to a minimum before the bombings.

Fordow was one of three Iranian nuclear facilities that were struck by US forces on Saturday evening, along with Natanz and Isfahan.

The news comes at a time when tensions in the region have increased significantly following the US decision to join Israel's military campaign against Iran.

The head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization, Mohammad Eslami, has sent a letter to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) demanding an immediate investigation into the US attacks. He called the US action “illegal” and criticized IAEA chief Rafael Grossi for “inaction” in the face of such aggression. According to Eslami, Iran has taken all measures to protect its sovereign rights and will pursue legal avenues to hold it accountable.

Furthermore, Iran's ambassador to the UN, Amir Saeid Iravani, has sent a letter to UN Secretary-General António Guterres and the current president of the Security Council, Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett.

In it, he calls for an urgent meeting of the Security Council to condemn the US airstrikes as “deliberate, premeditated and unprovoked.” Iravan accuses the US and Israel of collaborating in aggression and stresses that such acts have grave consequences for international peace and security.
