The United States is seeking to end the war with Iran at any cost. According to The Wall Street Journal, President Donald Trump is willing to end the war with Iran, even without reaching an agreement on Tehran's nuclear program, if Iran fully reopens the Strait of Hormuz.
According to the newspaper, Trump has privately discussed this possibility with his top advisers, after weeks of preparations to declare victory, in the event that Iran restores free movement of ships in this strategic sea route.
But that possibility became more difficult on Saturday, as Iran presented a series of demands in exchange for allowing free circulation in the strait.
Tehran is demanding billions of dollars in payments from the United States, the withdrawal of American troops from the region, and an end to the American naval blockade.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Iran has this time imposed more severe conditions than before to allow free passage of ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
The strait is one of the most strategic shipping lanes in the world and a major artery for global oil supplies. Iran currently has an agreement with Oman to manage the Strait of Hormuz, but its implementation depends entirely on the US accepting the terms.
