From suspicions of the "second killer" to conspiracy hypotheses over the decades: the dark spots on the murders of the former president, his brother and the African-American leader

The suspicion that Lee Harvey Oswald, the assassin who killed JFK in Dallas, was an informant or even an undercover CIA agent and that he was not the only one who fired. The inexplicable ballistic dynamics of the shots that five years later killed his brother, Robert Kennedy.

And the FBI's illegal pressure – surveillance, spying on private lives, unfounded political accusations – before the assassination of the leader of the African-American civil rights movement.

The three political assassinations that changed American history after World War II – that of President John Kennedy on November 22, 1963, that of his brother Robert, killed in Los Angeles on June 5, 1968 while he was a candidate for President, and the slightly earlier one (April 4, 1968) of leader Martin Luther King – have been the subject of discussions, hypotheses, and alternative versions to the "official narrative" of judicial and parliamentary investigations for decades.

Three events with declared or, at least, identified perpetrators, but with many dark spots that have fascinated historians, journalists and filmmakers: hundreds of books, films and documentaries that deal with everything from attempts to shed light on inconsistencies in the investigations to genuine conspiracy theories.

Now Donald Trump has decided to reopen these three cases, asking state institutions to declassify and publish all documents on these issues, until now kept secret, to "reveal the truth to the citizens."

"Big deal, right?" he commented during the signing of the executive order.

In fact, this is the latest in a series of interventions of this type, undertaken since 2017.

That year, Trump himself declassified tens of thousands of documents, but many remained withheld due to requests from the CIA and FBI, which objected, citing national security reasons.

Later, Biden also repeatedly lifted the secrecy restrictions on many other documents (with some exceptions).

What will happen now?

The President has requested a declassification program within 15 days for JFK and within 45 days for RFK and Luther King.

It is not clear what will be revealed and in what timeframe.

Lack of documents or even possible conspiracies by disloyal officials of state institutions, who have acted without the knowledge of their superiors, may come to light.

But Trump will still achieve the objective that interests him most: increasing citizens' distrust of public institutions and especially of the "deep state", the FBI, intelligence, and the Ministry of Justice, which he sees as the organizers of the conspiracy against him.

In Dallas

Oswald shot John Kennedy from a warehouse in Dealey Plaza in Dallas, Texas. Did he act alone? According to the 1964 Warren Commission, yes.

But in 1979, another investigation (House Select Committee) argued that it was likely that two people had shot him.

So, a conspiracy, not simply the action of a wreck like Oswald, who never gave his version after being shot dead two days later by Jack Ruby, a nightclub owner, while being transferred from one prison to another.

Oswald, a former Marine at a US base in Japan near a CIA station, a defector who defected to the Russians in 1959 and then returned to the US, was under CIA surveillance.

Surveillance increased when, six weeks before he killed Kennedy, he went to Mexico City (possibly with a CIA agent), where he visited the Russian and Cuban embassies. Yet he managed, unperturbed, to assassinate the most protected man in the US.

The second Kennedy

Robert Kennedy Jr., now Secretary of Health, was 14 when his father was assassinated and believes the evidence of CIA involvement in Uncle John's death is clear. He also suspects "services" involvement in his father's death, though without hard evidence.

Shiran Shiran, the Palestinian who killed Robert Kennedy, shot himself in front of the cameras and received life imprisonment. However, experts have never explained two facts: the recording shows 13 shots, while Shiran's gun had only 8 rounds in its magazine. Moreover, Shiran fired from the front, but the fatal bullet entered from behind.

A second assassin here too? A bodyguard behind him, Thane Eugene Cesar, pulled out a gun. But only one witness saw him shoot. Jackie Kennedy, John's widow, had predicted this second assassination.

Luther King

James Earl Ray was convicted as the sole assassin of Martin Luther King. He pleaded guilty and later withdrew it.

Many wanted Luther King dead, but the theory of a single assassin who shot from a window across from the Lorraine Hotel and then left the gun there with his fingerprints did not convince everyone.

King's wife, Coretta, always denounced a "high-level US government conspiracy."

The investigations led nowhere. But King was persecuted for years, accused of sexual misconduct, and even driven to suicide. Targeted by then-FBI chief Edgar Hoover, who saw him as a communist. Denied by MLK, he denied: "There are more Eskimos in Florida than communists in my movement."/ Corriere della Sera
