Democrats again urge Biden to reconsider his run
President celebrates Joe Biden

Worried about Joe Biden's ability to win the election this November, Democrats are urging him to revisit the issue of running while he is staying away from the campaign because of the COVID-19 bug.

Biden has insisted he will not back down, convinced he is the candidate who can beat former President Donald Trump again.

But publicly and privately, heavyweight Democrats are sending signals of concern, and some hope he will give a reassessment to the trajectory of the race and his legacy in running the country.

Last week, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries spoke privately with the president, laying out the views of Democrats in Congress, including their concerns.

On Wednesday, California Rep. Adam Schiff, a close ally of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, became the highest-profile Democrat in the House of Representatives to call on Biden to drop out of the race. He said that while he knows this decision is up to Biden alone, he believes it is time for him to "pass the baton."

As tensions over Biden's ability to win have eased somewhat, largely after the trump assassination assassination and the Republican National Convention in Milwok, Democrats know they have limited time to resolve the concerns within the party after Biden's poor showing in the first presidential debate.

Of course, many Democrats want Biden to stay in the race. And the Democratic National Committee is continuing with plans for a virtual vote to make Biden the party's nominee in the first week of August, ahead of the Democratic National Convention, which kicks off on August 19 in Chicago.

On Wednesday evening, ABC News released new details about Biden's private weekend meeting with Schumer at the president's home in Dellauer.

Schumer said he told the president it would be "better for the Democratic Party and for the good of the country if he pulled out."

A spokesman for Schumer called the news a complete speculation.

White House press secretary Andrew Bates said Biden told Schumer and Jeffries that "he was the party's nominee and that he planned to win and look forward to working with both of them to pass his 100-day agenda to help American families."

But among Democrats nationwide, nearly two-thirds say Biden should step aside and let his party nominate another candidate, according to a new poll by the Norc Center for Public Affairs Research and the AP news agency. That strongly contradicts Biden's post-debate claim that "simple Democrats" continued to support him even though "big names" of the party had opposed him.

With Schiff's response, there are 20 Democratic lawmakers in Congress who have called on Biden to withdraw from the presidential race.

/Voa
