US Secretary of State Antony Blinken called on Saturday for the protection of civilians in the Gaza Strip and Israel, after the Israeli army ordered half of the Palestinians - more than 1 million - to evacuate to southern Gaza.
Blinken met with Saudi Arabia's foreign minister, Prince Faisal bin Farhan, as the top US diplomat held meetings for a third day with Middle East officials to prevent an escalation of the war between Israel and Hamas.
Both sides have stressed the importance of minimizing harm to civilians as Israel prepares for an eventual ground offensive, a week after the militant group Hamas carried out an unprecedented attack on Israel.
"While Israel has a legitimate right to protect people and make sure that something like this never happens again, it is extremely important that we all take care of civilians and we are working in that direction," he said. Blinken said before leaving for the United Arab Emirates for further talks.
"None of us wants to see civilians suffering, whether in Israel, or in Gaza, or anywhere else," Blinken said.
The Saudi minister has said that the Kingdom is committed to protecting civilians.
"It is a worrying situation", he said.
"It is a very difficult situation. You know, the ones who suffer the most are the civilians and the civilian population on both sides is being affected, so it is important, in my opinion, to condemn the targeting of civilians in any form and by any side."
A US official said on Saturday that Washington had not asked Israel to slow or pause the evacuation plan.
The US Department of State has authorized on Saturday the removal of non-essential US Government staff from embassies in Jerusalem and offices in Tel Aviv, REL reports.
