A poll shows public support for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his allies is collapsing after a deadly Hamas attack in southern Israel, with voters switching to Benny Gantz's National Unity party following his decision to join the government and to form an emergency cabinet.

The poll, published by Maariv, gives the centrist National Unity 41 seats, up from the 12 it currently holds.

Meanwhile, Likud falls to just 19 seats, well below the 32 it currently holds.

The poll gives the hard-line parties Otzma Yehud and Religious Zionism five and four seats respectively. The two won 14 seats together in the last election. Ultra-Orthodox parties have also lost a small share of support.

The results show how much the Hamas massacre, which saw the terror group rampage through southern Israel, killing at least 1,300 and taking around 150 hostages, has eroded people's faith in the country's leadership and their claims that they were the only ones who could secure the place.

Leaders often get a boost in support thanks to the rally around the flag effect, but the depth of the carnage and the depth of the intelligence and security failure have led to an outburst for Netanyahu.

Respondents show a strong preference for Gantz over Netanyahu leading the country, with 48 percent wanting the former defense minister, compared to 29 percent for the current prime minister.

They give IDF Chief Herzi Halevy a 57 percent approval rating, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant a 54 percent rating, with Netanyahu at just 42 percent. Even among likely Likud voters, Netanyahu only gets 67 percent.

Despite the issues exposed in Saturday's attack, 71 percent say they have a lot or some confidence in the IDF to protect the country.

The poll was conducted with 600 people on October 11 and 12.
