As Americans await election results, Washington is on high alert for possible violence by Donald Trump supporters, fearing a repeat of the Capitol riots in 2021.

To prevent any violent reaction from various citizens, the authorities have increased the security forces in the capital Washington, Capitol Hill and the White House.

They have been secured with metal barriers and many shops and office buildings have been closed.

The White House complex looks like a castle, the American media write. A black metal fence more than two meters high has been added to the already existing strict security measures.

The US Federal Police established a national election command in Washington to analyze election-related threats around the clock.

Federal and local authorities fear scenes reminiscent of the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021. That day, a pro-Trump mob ransacked the halls of Congress after the former president lost the election.

Trump has already begun to question the integrity of the vote even before the ballots are counted.

The number of security officers around voting centers in the US has increased to almost 100,000.
