Perhaps you have never heard of this battle, but it is one of the rare encounters between Russian forces and the US military, and the outcome was not good for the mercenaries of the infamous "Wagner" group.

The battle took place in Khasham, Syria, in February 2018, and has gone down in history as "Red February" because of the blood shed by the Russians who were defeated in a few minutes.

In Syria, that year there were Russian military forces who were aligned with the Assad regime and American forces who supported the Syrian Democratic Forces. Although they did not confront each other, their enemy was common; Islamic State terrorists.

But as American special forces were defending a fortification near an oil field, about 500 Wagner mercenaries and Syrian troops thought it would be good to attack them to follow them and take control of the oil-bearing area.

As the attack began with armored vehicles, tanks and AFVs, the Americans called the Russian command to ask if they were the ones attacking them. The answer was negative, the Russians denied being part of the attack.

That was enough for the Americans to give the "OK" to the launch of an offensive that would prove fatal for the enemy. Two Reaper drones that had taken to the sky immediately attacked the convoy of enemy vehicles, shooting down the first and last vehicle in order to block them.

For the next 10 minutes, the barrage of American air superiority would prove disastrous for the aggressors. Four Apache planes took to the air and launched a volley of sensor-controlled machine guns.

An AC-130 bomber as well as an American B-52 immediately took off in the sky. Bombs and rockets continued to fire at Wagner's mercenaries and those of the Syrian government, causing at least 200 deaths in the first minutes of the attack.

Disoriented and unaware of the fire, the Russian mercenaries began to flee to save their lives, but according to reports of the time, throughout the night they were chased into their shelters and bombed by American F-22 aircraft.

A few minutes into the battle, the Russian command called the American one, asking it to stop the attack, which implies that the Russian army was aware that the mercenaries were involved in the battle.

The balance was tragic. Over 200 killed by "Wagner" mercenaries and none killed or injured by American special forces.

Also, the message was clear, the US military showed that they would not tolerate even the slightest provocation against their troops. And that the response in this case would be quick and strong.
